First thoughts: People buy art to match their rooms, I would buy my room to match this artwork.

Here I find a beautiful understanding of color. This encaustic makes color dance. It’s warm and fluid. What I find so interesting in this particular piece is that even the blues and greens are warm. The electric periwinkle stitches are so stricking because they are the only cold area on this spectra-scape.

These small dashes combined with the burned stripe on the left add a rawness to the piece. It’s reminiscent of pain or suffering, yet when I look at this piece, all I feel is serenity. I love that all the colors and textures mingle together in a way that is so rich and far from mixing into mud.

Aside from the color and texture, the composition is intriguing. At first it appears bottom-heavy with the blues and purples swimming in the lower third of the piece. But following what I’ve decided are stitches or perhaps a little zipper of a road up the spine of the blue mass, a little light blue drop dives off the dark mesa top. The drop directs me toward the burned gauze strip on the side bringing the artword full circle.

To me, this is the kind of art that you could spend a lifetime getting to know. You could stare at it for hours and still never discover all the little intricacies of an image that appears so simple at first.
